Today, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Amb. Monica Juma received hosted HE Federica Mogherini the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, at her office.

The talks between the two focused on cooperation between Kenya and the EU on regional peace and security, blue economy, trade and multilateralism.

‘The partnership between Kenya and European Union is a key pillar of our relationship as reflected by regular structured dialogue between the Kenya Government and Head of Missions from EU member states to deliberate on matters of mutual interest, including promoting peace and security, trade and investment, climate change, the Big Four Agenda and development cooperation.” noted CS Juma.

HE Morgherine commended and thanked Kenya for its role in the pursuit of peace and security and leadership in driving regional
integration. The two Ministers agreed on enhancing cooperation across all areas and particularly on peace and security and trade.

CS Juma took the opportunity to seek support for Kenya’s bid for the UN Security Council non-permanent seat in the period 2021-2022.

“I note that Kenya has found a valuable partner in the EU in numerous areas, including supporting peace and security in our fragile region, contribution towards counter terrorism initiatives mainly through the EU Regional Counter- Terrorism (CT) Law Enforcement Project-Horn of Africa and Yemen. In combating global terrorism and sustaining the painful gains, we urge you to support Kenya in listing the Al-Shabab as a terrorism organization under the United Nation Security Council Resolution 1267,” said CS Juma.

Later on, they addressed a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters before proceeding for a high level meeting with His Excellency, President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.

Thereafter, the two Ministers will attend the launch of the cross border program at the UNON complex in Gigiri.
