Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb. Monica Juma, today held bilateral meetings with several delegates on the sidelines of the ongoing African Regional High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism Conducive to Terrorism at the United Nations Headquarters in Gigiri.
Amb, Juma received Ms. Bineta Diop, the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security at her office during which they reviewed follow-up to the ‘Women Deliver 2019 Global Conference’ held in Vancouver, Canada in June 2019. They discussed modalities for promoting women engagement in peace and security in the region, and the upcoming African Women Leadership Network Retreat to be hosted in Nairobi in August 2019.
Later, the Cabinet Secretary met Ms. Bintou Keita, the United Nations Assistant General for Peace Keeping Operations who paid her a courtesy call. In her remarks Ms. Keita commended Kenya’s efforts in the quest for regional peace and security. She further applauded Kenya for meeting the United Nations standards for gender deployment in peace keeping operations.
In her third consultative meeting of the day, CS Juma met Mr. Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, UN Special Envoy for Horn of Africa and exchanged views on how the United Nations can better contribute to regional peace and security as well as sustainable development in the Horn of Africa. The CS congratulated the new envoy on his appointment and extended Kenya’s support in tandem with its long-held commitment to UN ideals and principles. Mr. Onanga reiterated UN’s support towards the appointment and role of Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka as the Special Peace Envoy to South Sudan.
