COMESA SUMMIT KICKS OFF, NEW SG TO BE APPOINTED

Lusaka, ZAMBIA, 14th July (MFA PRESS) -The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Council of Ministers meeting kicks off in Lusaka, Zambia. The meeting precedes the Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting tomorrow and the Summit scheduled for July 18 and 19.

 

The theme of this year summit is – “COMESA towards digital economic integration” and its intended to rally member countries toward fully adaptation of digital technologies for fast tracking trade.

 

In the agenda is consideration of membership to COMESA by Tunisia and Somalia, this will bring the number of members from the current 19 to 21.

 

The Summit will also approve appointment of a new Secretary General of COMESA to take over from Sindiso Ngwenya whose term has come to end.

 

Kenya will be seeking for an extension of the sugar safeguard to cushion its sugar industry. The current safeguard is expected to expire in February 2019.

 

Hon Namwamba accompanied by Trade PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo is leading the Kenya delegation at the COMESA Policy Organs Meetings in Lusaka from 14th to 20th July and will also represent Cabinet Secretary Foreign Affairs Amb Monica Juma at the 16th meeting of COMESA Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting and the 20th COMESA Summit.
