Kenya to Lead the United Nations in the Formulation of Global Sustainable Development GoalsFriday, March 15, 2013| Press ReleaseUnited Nations General Assembly has unanimously elected Kenya to co-chair an intergovernmental Open Working Group (OWG) tasked with the formulation of the global sustainable development goals (SDGs).The group is open to the participation of all the 193 UN member states but will be represented in an arrangement in which thirty (30) member states elected from the five regions of the United Nations will take the lead in developing a report on the sustainable development goals. The goals are supposed to catalyze and galvanize international cooperation and action towards poverty eradication and protection of environment. The establishment of the intergovernmental working group was one of the key outcomes of the Rio+20 conference held last June in Brazil. As follow-up of the decisions, the President of the General Assembly earlier this year appointed the Amb. Macharia Kamau and Amb. Csaba Körösi Permanent Representatives of Kenya and Hungary to the United Nations respectively as co-facilitators of the intergovernmental consultative process that developed the methods of work and the agenda.During the first meeting of the open working group held on March 14, 2013 in New York and attended by various ministers and other high level representatives, the General Assembly unanimously elected Kenya and Hungary to spearhead this historic intergovernmental process. It is important to note that unlike the Millennium Development Goals, member states will have the opportunity to define and formulate the SDG for themselves. The goals will be an integral part of the post-2015 UN development agenda that will be applicable to all member states. They are expected to be the authoritative guidelines for sustainable development and should therefore be action-oriented, concise and easy to communicate; limited in number; aspirational and global in nature.  In his address to the General Assembly, the President of the 68th session described the sustainable development goals as “the single-most important element of the post-2015 agenda.”The statement by Kenya at the session was read by Hon. Naomi Shaban, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Development. She emphasized that sustainable development goals must build on the success of the MDGs and be pragmatic allowing for development policy space for developing countries. The Minister was in New York leading Kenya delegation to the annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.  She thanked member states for the trust and confidence bestowed on Kenya to lead this important intergovernmental assignment. The appointment of Kenya has been highly acknowledged and appreciated by the developing world which is grappling with socio-economic and environmental challenges. Therefore, the leadership of Kenya will be crucial in this process.Public Affairs and CommunicationMinistry of Foreign AffairsNairobi
