Kenya’s Erastus Mwencha was last night elected as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) at the 19th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) which officially opened yesterday. During the elections which went late into the night, South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was elected Chairperson of the Commission.
Mwencha won with 50 votes while Dlamini-Zuma won with 37 votes. The elections were one of the high moments during the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU. The elections were held at the plenary hall of the New AU Conference Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 19th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) whose theme: “Boosting Intra-African Trade”.
