Japan joins Canada to Co-Host Blue Economy conference in Nairobi

Foreign Affairs  Cabinet Secretary Amb. Monica Juma held a bilateral meeting with her Japanese counterpart, Hon. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the margins of the TICAD Ministerial Meeting.

Minister Kono commended Kenya’s leadership during TICAD VI and underscored the importance  of continued engagement and strategic partnership. The CS conveyed condolences to the people of Japan following the recent destructive torrential rains,hurricanes and earthquakes that resulted in loss of lives and property.


The two Ministers agreed to continue working together in mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. Both leaders expressed satisfaction at the growing bilateral partnership between Kenya and Japan. Japan confirmed its participation and availability to co-host the High Level Sustainable Blue Economy Conference to be held in Nairobi on 26-28 November 2018 and appreciated Kenya’s support for Osaka’s bid to host the World Expo 2025.

The two leaders further discussed  the urgency of lifting Japan’s travel advisory on Kenya, finalizing of the Agreement  on the Protection of Investment and Avoidance of Double Taxation to incentivise Japanese investment,Japan’s facilitation of the access of Kenyan exports to the Japanese market, mutual support for candidatures in multilateral agencies,commitment to peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Korean Peninsula and increasing the number of scholarships for Kenyan students to study in Japanese institutions.
