Kenya-Malaysia Relations Excellent – says CS Amina Mohamed

STATEMENT FOR USE BY THE CABINET SECRETARY DURING THE FAREWELL LUNCHEON IN HONOUR OF H.E. MR. ISMAIL SALAM, THE OUTGOING HIGH COMMISSIONER OF MALAYSIA TO BE HELD ON May 23, 2017

Your Excellency High Commissioner Ismail Salam,

Excellencies invited Ambassadors and High Commissioners,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen.

We are gathered here today to bid farewell to an exemplary diplomat, H.E. Mr. Ismail Salam, High Commissioner of Malaysia who is leaving after an outstanding tour of duty in Kenya.

Excellency,

The outgoing High Commissioner of Malaysia has consolidated our relations through his networks in Kenya and Malaysia. He has been active and very engaged with our Government and the society.  I know he really loves Kenya and will continue being a good friend to our country.

I am confident that the excellent bilateral relations between Kenya and Malaysia will continue to flourish under the reign of His Majesty King Sultan Muhammad V.

I note with appreciation the efforts of High Commissioner Ismail Salam during his tenure that has propelled the relations between our two countries to even greater heights. We are confident of a bright future of partnership and shared prosperity. We have in the recent past seen growth in our bilateral relations visible in the growing interest by Malaysian Companies to invest in Kenya in the areas of Construction, Infrastructure and Housing.

Because of your strong leadership focus and partnership, our two countries have made great strides culminating in the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Science, Technology and in Planning, Implementation of Road Projects and positive developments in the field of tourism.

We truly appreciate your assistance in facilitation of Kenyans who travelled to Malaysia to study while others travelled on official visits.

Kenya and Malaysia still have opportunities to further deepen our engagement in various sectors including Trade, Information Communication Technology and Education especially since Malaysia remains one of the World’s most preferred destinations for academic studies. Indeed thousands of Kenyans are currently living in Malaysia as students and we have seen these figures grow from year to year.

Excellency,

The educational partnership with Malaysia has enabled our youth to acquire skills relevant to Kenya’s development needs. Many Kenyans have had an opportunity to study Masters Degrees and PHDs in Malaysia through the First Lady of Kenya Scholarship Award Program.

In addition, the Government of Malaysia under Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme and the Malaysia International Scholarship offers a number of scholarships to the Government of Kenya for technical courses in areas such as infrastructure, housing and urban development and Information communication Technology.

Excellency,

The enduring friendship between our two nations have contributed to the achievement of prosperity for our peoples and to the close cooperation at regional and international level, for instance in our common positions at the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, G-15 and in the World Trade Organization, among others.

Excellency,

As you come to the end of your tour of duty, you leave knowing that you have left a mark of distinguished service in promoting the relations not only between our two Governments, but also creating bonds of friendship between our two peoples and for that we salute you.

Finally, we wish you the very best in your next assignment, and look forward to our continuous engagement because you are a true friend of Kenya.

It is now my pleasure to toast: To the success and good health of His Excellency Ismail Salam and to the friendship between the people of our two countries.
