FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH UK MINISTER FOR AFRICA

Foreign Affairs minister, Moses Wetang’ula has lauded the longstanding friendly relations and cooperation between Kenya and the UK, but said the potential for further cooperation is still enormous. The Minister made the remarks when he held discussions with the UK Minister in charge of African Affairs, Hon. Henry Bellingham, who paid him a courtesy call in his office today. Hon. Bellingham was accompanied by the British High Commissioner in Nairobi, H.E. Robert Macaire.

Wetang’ula said that the two countries shared many areas of concern both at the domestic and multilateral level. He called for the deepening relations, not only on key foreign policy issues, but also in building stronger and mutually beneficial economic and commercial ties. He said that Kenya’s long term development strategy- the vision 2030, sets out potential investment opportunities on capital projects which can deliver good returns for UK investors. The UK is a key development partner and the single largest foreign investor in Kenya.

Wetang’ula thanked the UK for supporting various programmes in the country, and made an appeal to the Minister to request the UK Government to reconsider its decision to suspend funding for the Free Education programme.

Their discussions also touched on regional issues and the upcoming referendum on the new constitution in Kenya.

AU SUMMIT IN KAMPALA

The 15th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) is underway at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. The Summit of African Heads of State and Government kicked off on 19th July 2010, and will end later this month on the 29th. 

 
Addressing the meeting, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Moses Wetang’ula expressed appreciation to the Government of Uganda for the warm reception and hospitality accorded to Kenyans and other delegations attending the ongoing regional meeting. The Minister also extended condolences to the Government and people
of Uganda following the recent bombings in Kampala which led to the loss of
more than 70 lives (including a Kenyan) and injury to many others. The minister
said that the Kampala bombing spells a new security threat to Africa. He called on African leaders to unite against this new threat.  Hon. Wetang’ula called on the African Union to strengthen and align the mandate of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) from-peace keeping to peace-making.   The Minister said that decisions of the 15th Extra-Ordinary Summit of IGAD held in Addis Ababa on 5th July 2010 resolved to support a collective decision by the AU on Somalia.
The Foreign Affairs Minister was optimistic that the forthcoming referendum in Sudan will be free and fair.  Besides, the minister emphasized the importance of science and technology for Africa’s development and growth.

Wetang’ula calls for a more proactive international engagement on Somalia

Foreign Affairs Minister, Honourable Moses Wetang’ula has reiterated his appeal to the international community to show a firm commitment in its response to the situation in Somalia. The Minister made the remarks when he held discussions with the Norwegian ambassador in Nairobi, H.E. Amb. Elisabeth Jacobsen in his office today.

The discussions centered on the security situation in the Somalia, brought into sharp relief by the recent dynamics such as the bombings in Kampala -which have been linked to the al-shabaab militia- and the ambitious proposals arising from the 15th Extra-Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government held on 5th July in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Farewell for Newly Appointed Ambassadors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs last night hosted a farewell party for the newly appointed ambassadors. The party was held in Nairobi and graced by the Permanent Secretary Mr. Thuita Mwangi.

The 25 new envoys were appointed by H.E the President in May to represent Kenya at its diplomatic missions abroad.

Speaking during the opening of the party, Mr. Mwangi congratulated the new envoys for their appointment. He said that Kenya recognizes the important role played by her diplomats in international diplomatic practice which is becoming increasingly more dynamic.
