Foreign Service Institute conducts training for Somali Diplomats

15 diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) are undertaking a two -week training programme on Diplomacy organized jointly organized by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) and the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS).

The Training Programme was officially opened today by the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Richard Onyonka. Also present at the official opening ceremony was Mr.  Mohamed Asman Aden , the Deputy Head of Mission of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia in Nairobi, Mr. Tariq Chawdry from UNPOS, Ambassador Philip Mwanzia, the Director of Foreign Service Institute, Mr. Nganatha Karugu from the Kenya Institute of Administration,  among other dignitaries . The Programme runs from 14th to 26th June.

KENYA-THAILAND JOINT COMMISSION FOR COOPERATION OPENS IN NAIROBI

The inaugural session of the Kenya /Thailand Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation has convened in Nairobi today. The session was officially opened by Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kenya. Hon. Wetang’ula is leading the Kenya delegation to the JCC. The delegation also consists of representatives from the Ministry’s of Trade, Finance, Water, Housing, Fisheries, Tourism and National Heritage and Culture. Others are from the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Health, Agriculture, Higher Education, Science and Technology, and other government agencies. The Thai delegation is led H.E. Kasit Piromya, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.

In his remarks during the opening ceremony, Hon. Wetangu’ula hailed the warm and cordial relations between the two countries, which he noted, had been strengthened by the exchange of high level visits by senior government officials from both countries. H.E.  President Mwai Kibaki visited Thailand in October 2004, while Thailand’s, then Prime Minister, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, made a state visit to Kenya in November 2005. Recently, Kenya’s Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga made a stopover in Bangkok in February 2010, where he met with Thai’s Prime Minister.

Kenya to partner with CASA Africa to promote development cooperation

Kenya has welcomed an offer from the Government of Spain to work together to strengthen development cooperation in cultural, education and economic sectors through increased partnership with CASA Africa. CASA Africa is a public consortium under the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs formed in 2006- under the framework of the Spanish Africa Plan- with the aim of expanding cooperation with African countries. Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary, Mr. Thuita Mwangi expressed the government’s appreciation of the cooperation program during a meeting with H.E Nicholas Martin Cinto, the Spanish Ambassador in Nairobi, who paid him a courtesy call in his office today. Ambassador Cinto was accompanied by Mr. Ricardo Martinez Vazquez, the Chairman of CASA Africa.

Ambassador Cinto said that the Spanish Government recognizes Kenya as a key player in the region and hailed the important role the country plays in the sub -regional integration process. He added that CASA Africa embodies the consolidation of Spanish Foreign Policy on Africa, which seeks to change the negative perception of Africa and present the continent as a place of great challenges, potential and enormous opportunities.

UN –HABITAT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MRS. ANNA TIBAIJUKA RETIRES

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, the UN Under-Secretary Director and Executive Director of the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) has retired. Mrs. Tibaijuka’s exit from the organization she has served for two decades was marked on May 14, 2010 during a Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) meeting at the UN complex in Gigiri.

UN-Habitat is the United Nations specialized agency for human settlements. It was established in 1978 and has its headquarters at the UN complex in Nairobi, Kenya. Its responsibility is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Addressing the CPR in an emotional farewell speech, the outgoing UN-Habitat Executive Director appreciated the time she had stayed at the global body as its head. She delivered a historical overview of the organization she has served diligently for the last ten years. Mrs. Tibaijuka said that steady progress has been made since she first addressed the UN-Habitat in 2000.  The UN-Habitat, she added, has continuously received a lot of support from member states in its role in monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the Habitat agenda.
