ONYONKA MEETS WITH COTE D’ IVOIRE’S PRESIDENT SPECIAL ENVOY

Foreign Affairs assistant minister, Hon. Richard Onyonka, yesterday received Mr. Lambert Serry bahi, the special envoy of the President of Cote d’Ivoire, Laureau Gbagbo, who paid him a courtesy call in his office.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations between the two countries. They underscored the need to review bilateral ties to tap in on the numerous opportunities existing in the two countries. Mr. Lambert cited the launching of direct flights from Nairobi to Abidjan by the national carrier, Kenya Airways, as an important milestone towards enhancing trade and economic relations between the countries.

The envoy also briefed the minister on the current political situation in the Cote d’ Ivoire. He said that the Ivorian government was committed to reunifying the country and organizing free and fair elections in the spirit of the Ouagadougou agreement. He called on African leaders and the African Union to support his country to achieve peace and stability.

KARURA FOREST GETS NEW STOCK OF TREES

The Government has initiated a major campaign to re-forest Karura Forest, just outside the city of Nairobi. On Friday 23rd April 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was one of the Government Ministries and state Corporations that took part in a tree planting exercise in the forest that saw thousands of seedlings planted. The Permanent secretary Mr. Thuita Mwangi planted a tree alongside other PSs and senior Government officials at the historic conservation site.

The tree planting campaign was led by Ambassador Francis Muthaura who is the Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of Public Service.  It was coordinated by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife Mr. Kombo Mwero.

Apart from the technocrats, politicians also took part in the tree planting exercise including the Minister for Regional Development Authorities and Member of Parliament for Westlands Hon. Fred Gumo.  Karura Forest falls within the larger Westlands Constituency represented by the MP. The exercise was heavily supported by the local community who helped ferry and plant hundreds of seedlings in the forests.

THE STATE OF ISRAEL BUILDS A SCHOOL IN KOROGOCHO SLUMS

The government of Israel, through its Embassy in Nairobi, has completed one of the most significant projects in Korogocho slum in Nairobi—a primary school in the heart of the informal settlement area. The modern building was handed over to the Kisumu Ndogo Primary School head teacher on Thursday 22nd April 2010 by the Israeli Ambassador to Kenya Mr. Jacob Keider.

The ceremony coincided with the 62nd anniversary of Israeli’s independence.  Addressing guests at the newly completed school, Ambassador Keider said that the Embassy decided to commemorate the historic event by contributing to the well being of the poor. 

Ambassador Keider was accompanied by his wife Osnat who has dedicated much of her time in Kenya for the emancipation of the underprivileged dwellers in Kenya’s slum areas.  The handing over ceremony was also attended by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Development Hon. Esther Murugi and the Member of Parliament for Kasarani Constituency Hon. Elizabeth Ongoro. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was represented by the outgoing Head of Middle East Division Mr. Ken vitisia.

KENYA/DJIBOUTI JOINT COMMISSION FOR COOPERATION

The inaugural session of the Kenya/Djibouti Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) was held in Nairobi from 20th to 21st April 2010. The session was officially opened by Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Minister, Foreign Affairs Kenya and his Djibouti counterpart Hon. Mohmoud Ali Youssouf. The delegation hailed the cordial relations between the two countries and emphasized on the need to deepen and enhance the excellent bilateral cooperation that exist between them. It was noted that there was need to  stress  the need for the countries to share each other’s strengths with a view to increase capacities in areas of Foreign affairs, security and governance, trade & investment and social affairs including health, education and scientific research.

On regional matters both delegates acknowledged the serious security situation in Somalia and the need to support Djibouti Peace Process. The meeting recommended that the two countries should cooperate to ensure all interest Groups in Somalia Conflict are part of Djibouti Peace Agreement.
