Amb. J. Gaita of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explain Kenya's Foreign Policy to members of the public during the public Service week
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday took its service delivery to the doorstep of its clients during this year’s Public Service Week held at the KICC ground. The ministry was one of the forty two ministries that were represented at the event which will take three days between October 13 -16, 2009.Organised by the Ministry of State for Public Service, the occasion is an opportunity for the public Service to provide faster and customized services to members of the public.

The theme of this year’s public Service Week is, Modernizing Public Service for Realization of Vision 2030. The slogan in Kiswahili Huduma Bora ni Haki Yako, is intended to create awareness about the government’s commitment to serve Kenyans and others efficiently.

This is the third Public Service Week to be held; one of the products of the reforms introduced in the Public Service.  Speaking during the opening of the ministry of Foreign Affairs stand at Kenyatta International Conference Centre, The Permanent Secretary hailed the occasion as a milestone in service delivery. Mr. Thuita Mwangi said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had unveiled a new foreign policy which defines Kenya’s engagement with the international community.

The new foreign policy spells out the Mission, Vision and core values of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Kenya is guided by the principle peaceful coexistence among nations, peaceful resolution among nations and respect of the United Nations Charter among others. The document places, first and foremost, the welfare and interest of Kenya in its interaction with the international community. It is with this view that the new foreign policy places emphasis on Peace diplomacy, Economic Diplomacy, Diaspora Diplomacy and Environmental Diplomacy. Another significant aspect covered in the foreign policy document is cultural diplomacy. For a long time, Kenya has dominated the world in the field of sports, with many Kenyan athletes breaking records at major world events.

This year’s Public Service Week therefore, will enlighten members of the public on the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and what to expect from it. Kenyans and other interested members of the public had the opportunity to be served at the Ministry’s stand. During the presentation at the stand, authentication of documents was done to citizens and non citizens wishing to travel and study in foreign institutions.   Members of the public were also given advisory services concerning immigration, foreign countries.
