 The EU TROIKA delegation meeting with foreign Affairs Minister Wetang'ula at the ministry’s headquaters. An EU Troika delegation led by Swedish Minister for International Development and Cooperation Mrs. Gunilla Carlson paid a courtesy call to the Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Moses Wetang’ula during their visit to Kenya on 10th December 2009. She was accompanied by a delegation comprising of 10 members among them H. E Mrs. Ann Dismorr, Swedish Ambassador to Kenya and Mr. Jose Costa Pereira, Head of Unit, EU Council Secretariat. The Head of European Union Delegation in Nairobi H.E Mr. Eric Van der Lionden was also part of the ten man Delegation that visited the foreign Affairs minister. The EU delegation sought to find out the progress the government has made concerning the Reform recommendations that were proposed on agenda 4 by the Serena team of experts, which was led by H.E Kofi Anan. The leader of the Delegation further added that it was the EU’s wish that Kenyan political leaders stayed together in order to achieve peace, stability and open democracy in the country.
Expressing his views, Foreign Affairs Minister Moses wetang’ula said that the reforms implementations are on course. He said that the government is working hard to ensure the reforms are implemented within context and the time set. He also noted that the most critical reforms were a new constitution, Parliamentary reforms, Executive reforms and Environmental reforms. He further assured the delegation that the government was doing all it could to ensure it works smoothly. Hon. Wetang’ula cited the just released Harmonized Draft Constitution saying the cabinet was committed towards standing up for the constitution as a unity government. In her last remarks, Mrs. Gunilla Carlson thanked the minister for the good cooperation Kenya is involved in to fight against piracy and also to help the war torn Somalia region. Echoing her remarks, Hon. Wetang’ula said that the situation in Somalia is dire and that Kenya will work with other International Organizations to ensure the Horn of Africa is at peace. Concerning Sudan, the Minister said the just concluded IGAD summit in Djibouti reached a consensus to help Sudan. He said a committee had been set up to go to Khartoum to meet the Sudanese leadership and see how to bring them closer in an effort to moderate the situation. The issue on climate change could not go unmentioned in the meeting. Foreign Affairs Minister briefly said that Africa as a whole has taken a common position concerning issues on climate change. The Minister was optimistic that the ongoing Climate Summit in Copenhagen will be a platform for African Leaders to air their views concerning the matter. The Delegation later left to meet H. E the President Mwai Kibaki at State House, before leaving for Sweden. They were accompanied by Head of Europe and commonwealth Dr. Sang’. |
