The World Habitat day was observed in Kenya on 1st October, 2018, at the United Nations Office in Nairobi.
The event which was co-hosted by Kenya and Indonesia was graced by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Mayor of the city of Surabaya in Indonesia Ms.Tri Rismaharini and other high ranking Government officials and dignitaries.
In his address to the delegates, the President lauded the theme of the meeting, on “Municipal Solid Waste and Management”, Noting that solid waste posed one of the greatest challenges of our time and called for urgent action on solid waste management. In addition the President also commended both the National and County governments on their success achieved recently, in management of the environment mainly in the banning of plastic waste. He called on other intervention programs aimed at managing waste while still urging everyone to take personal responsibility in managing solid waste.
Other high ranking government officials in attendance included Hon. James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Amb. Macharia Kamau and Governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko.
