Kenya, Malaysia Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Kenya and Malaysia have agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership with a focus on trade and emerging technologies. The announcement was one of the key highlights of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s two-day official visit to Kenya — the first in 20 years — as the two nations mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.

Speaking at a joint press briefing at State House Nairobi after bilateral talks, President William Ruto said the two countries had committed to removing tariff and non-tariff barriers that have long constrained trade. The move, he said, will expand market access and stimulate new investment flows.

The two leaders also announced plans to deepen cooperation in STEM research, innovation, and education, positioning human capital development at the centre of future collaboration.

Kenya and Malaysia further agreed to work together in expanding the semiconductor industry, identifying it as a high-growth frontier sector with significant potential for technological and economic transformation.

On the global stage, President Ruto and Prime Minister Anwar reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen collaboration in multilateral fora, particularly on the reform of the global financial architecture and ongoing efforts to modernise and democratise the United Nations Security Council.

President Ruto thanked Malaysia for supporting efforts to upgrade the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), describing it as a vote of confidence in Nairobi’s growing role as a hub for global diplomacy.

During the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding, including a Bilateral Air Services Agreement aimed at improving connectivity between the two countries, and an MoU on tourism cooperation to enhance joint marketing, capacity-building and sectoral collaboration.

They also witnessed  over the signing of a Letter of Intent to twin the cities of Nairobi and Kuala Lumpur, opening avenues for cooperation in urban planning, smart city development, technology integration and improved service delivery.

Additionally they witnessed the signing of MOU between Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and its Malaysian counterpart  that aims at strengthening  of private sector linkages, with expected gains in manufacturing, agribusiness and digital  innovation.

“These instruments mark the beginning of broader and deeper strategic partnerships for mutual benefit,” President Ruto said, noting the strong foundations of South–South cooperation between the two nations.

The Prime Minister visit is anticipated to inject new momentum into Kenya–Malaysia cooperation as Nairobi positions itself as a regional hub for innovation, manufacturing, tourism and agricultural transformation.
