KENYA AND CANADA DEEPEN STRATEGIC TIES AHEAD OF BINATIONAL COMMISSION

Kenya and Canada are charting a renewed course in bilateral cooperation as Nairobi prepares to host the Fourth Session of the Kenya-Canada Binational Commission (BNC) in September 2026, signaling a strengthening of diplomatic, economic, and multilateral ties between the two Commonwealth partners.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to elevating the partnership during high-level engagements with Canada’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Amb. Joshua Tabah. The forthcoming BNC session is expected to provide a structured platform to review progress, unlock new opportunities, and address pending bilateral frameworks.

Ahead of the Commission, Kenya’s Americas Directorate is set to convene an interministerial consultative meeting to consolidate priority areas for discussion and assess the status of commitments made during the previous BNC. The technical groundwork underscores Nairobi’s intention to approach the 2026 session with clear deliverables and a forward-looking agenda.

Canada remains a strategic partner for Kenya, particularly in trade, aviation, and labour cooperation. Bilateral engagement has intensified in recent months. A Kenyan delegation led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Hon. Alfred Mutua visited Canada in October 2025, while a Canadian delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Education and Labour from the Province of New Brunswick visited Kenya in November 2025.

The reciprocal visits explored collaboration in labour mobility, skills development, and technical partnerships under the emerging Kenya-Canada Labour Mobility Framework an initiative designed to facilitate structured labour migration while enhancing workforce competencies. The framework reflects a shared commitment to creating safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial labour pathways.

Against the backdrop of evolving global trade dynamics characterized by tariffs and shifting supply chains, Kenya has emphasized its openness to Canadian investment across agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and ICT. Nairobi has also expressed interest in leveraging Canada’s global leadership in mining, oil and gas, aviation, cyber security, and advanced technologies  sectors aligned with Kenya’s economic transformation agenda.

Beyond bilateral economics, Kenya has appreciated Canada’s cooperation in addressing the complex security situation in Haiti, particularly through support for the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission and the Gang Suppression Force established under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2793 (2025). The collaboration underscores both nations’ commitment to multilateral peace and security frameworks.

Climate diplomacy and multilateral engagement also remain central pillars of the partnership. Canada continues to be a strategic ally in climate-change initiatives and in supporting the expansion of United Nations offices in Nairobi, reinforcing Kenya’s status as a global diplomatic hub.

The meeting was attended on the Kenyan side by Amb. Stella Munyi, Deputy Director-General and Director for the Americas; Ms. Mercy Odongo, Deputy Chief of Staff; and Mr. Gufu Hussein, Desk Officer for Canada. The Canadian delegation included Mr. Warren Mucci, Political Counsellor; Ms. Crista McInnis, Trade Counsellor; and Ms. Sophie Price, Development Counsellor reflecting the multi-sectoral scope of the bilateral engagement.

As preparations for the Fourth Binational Commission gather momentum, both Nairobi and Ottawa appear poised to translate diplomatic goodwill into structured agreements and tangible outcomes. The 2026 session will not only review progress but also define the next chapter of a partnership anchored in trade diversification, labour mobility, technological collaboration, climate action, and shared global responsibility.
