KENYA INTENSIFIES DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENTS FOR JUDGE PHOEBE OKOWA’S RE-ELECTION TO THE ICJ

In the lead-up to the November 2026 elections at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Kenya continues to champion the re-election of Judge Prof. Phoebe Okowa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term.

Led by Principal Secretary State Department for Foreign Affairs Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’oei Kenya’s campaign brings together months of intensive diplomatic outreach, reaffirming the country’s commitment to a strong, credible and representative international judicial system.

In its engagements with UN Member States in NewYork, Kenya has called for reflection on the kind of Court the international community needs, the principles that should guide its composition, and the qualities required of those entrusted with interpreting and applying international law at this consequential moment in our shared history.

Judge Okowa was successfully elected  in November, 2025 to fill the casual vacancy seat following the resignation of the eminent Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf of Somalia.

Her re-election  to the ICJ would mark a significant milestone in Kenya’s engagement with international justice and contribute to broader efforts to uphold the rule of law and promote the peaceful resolution of disputes among nations.
