Final Farewell

President William Ruto Leads Nation in Bidding Farewell to Raila Odinga

H.E. President William Ruto today led the nation in paying final respects to Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Hon Raila Amolo Odinga, who was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Odinga passed away while receiving treatment in India on October 15, 2025.

In his tribute, President Ruto described Raila Odinga as a man of courage, conviction, and strong faith in democracy.

“Raila Odinga served this nation with a rare mix of resilience and patriotism. He believed in a Kenya where freedom, justice, and opportunity are for all, not just the few. His voice may be silent, but his vision will continue to guide our democracy," said President Ruto.

The funeral ceremony brought together prominent figures, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, representatives from the African Union and East African Community, and various foreign envoys. Opposition leaders, cabinet secretaries, and members of Parliament also attended, showing the unity of purpose that defined the day.

Known fondly as “Baba” by millions of Kenyans, Raila Odinga leaves behind a lasting legacy as a freedom fighter, reformer, and statesman. His political journey, marked by detention, exile, and dedication to multiparty democracy, shaped Kenya’s political scene for over four decades.

Odinga’s lifelong commitment to peace and reconciliation extended beyond Kenya. He mediated in conflict-affected nations, including Mozambique and Burundi.

In 2011, Raila was appointed African Union Special Envoy for Peace in Côte d’Ivoire, earning respect on the continent as a proponent of dialogue and stability.

In Kenya, he will be remembered for his role in the 2008 National Accord, which ended the 2007 post-election crisis and paved the way for reconciliation and constitutional reform. His leadership during that time led to the Reconstruction and Reconciliation Act, laying the groundwork for national healing.

The funeral cortege, draped in the national flag, was accompanied by songs of freedom and unity.

“In honoring Raila Odinga, we honor the struggle for democracy. Let his life remind us that Kenya is strongest when we listen to one another, respect our differences, and work together for the greater good,” said President Ruto.

Raila Odinga now rests beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, another giant of Kenya’s independence struggle; a fitting symbol of continuity in Kenya’s ongoing journey toward freedom and unity.
