It was a sweaty Sunday morning for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs family when they joined the First Lady, Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta for the fifth edition of Beyond Zero marathon at the Nyayo national stadium in Nairobi.
The over 200 participants led by the Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Monica Juma, CAS, Hon. Ababu Namwamba among others participated in the 2km, 5km, 10km and 21km categories respectively. The proceeds will go into supporting programmes to reduce infant and maternal mortality.
The First Lady, who ran and won the 10 kilometer race was flagged by among others, HE Hailemariam Desalegne, the Former Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Ana the former First Lady of Ethiopia Madam Romano Tefaye; giving this marathon a really champion and international flair.
CS Juma lauded the First Lady for her immense contribution through the word reknowned beyond zero campaign that has led to the realisation of the dream of Kenyan mothers and their children. She also expressed her pride in the MFA family for coming out in large numbers to support the noble cause.
“Running for a great cause and support to a great patriot, a great athlete and great transformer- the First Lady,” she tweeted.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was the official guest at the award ceremony held inside the stadium while the Deputy President, William Ruto participated in the 21km marathon.
Indeed, the MFA family lived true to the mission of the Beyond Zero campaign: To ensure that all Kenyan mothers deliver safely, their children are born healthy, remain healthy and are HIV free.
